ERITREA

Eritrea, is a country in Northeast Africa. It is bordered by Sudan in the west, Ethiopia in the south, and Djibouti in the southeast. Eritrea is a single-party state, run by the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice. Eritrea is a full member state of the African Union. Within the region, Eritrea’s relations with Ethiopia turned from that of close alliance to a deadly rivalry that led to a war from May 1998 to June 2000 in which approximately 19,000 Eritreans and 123,000 Ethiopians were killed.

Like the economies of many other African nations, the economy is largely based on subsistence farming. Eritrea’s economic future remains mixed. The cessation of Ethiopian trade, which mainly used Eritrean ports before the war, leaves Eritrea with a large economic hole to fill.
