Cameroon Cameroonian cuisine is one of the most varied in Africa due to its location on the crossroads between the north, west, and center of the continent; added to this is the profound influence of French food, a legacy of the colonial era. Staple foods in Cameroon include cassava, cocoyam, yam, rice, plantain, potato, maize, beans, and millet. The French introduced the French bread and Italian pasta, which are not as widely consumed, however, due to their price. The main source of protein for most inhabitants is fish, with poultry and meat being too expensive for anything other than special occasions. L’Ovalie – Offers french cuisine.The food is excellent with lovely presentation and the service highly personalised. They have a deep wine-cave which could compete with any restaurant in Africa. It is however a tad more expensive than the other restaurants around this area. L’Ovalie is rated third on the Trip Advisor amongst 47 restaurants in Douala. Bombay Masala – Douala. As the name goes it offers Indian cuisine. For the home sick, this comes as close to home as home can be. The food is excellent, reasonable presentation, excellent interiors and good service. Expensive but has a decent bar. I am told that they have recently added a lounge there. Best Indian food I have had in Africa outside an Indian family’s kitchen. Le Comptoir Colonial – in Douala. More a watering hole than a restaurant, where the fish is always fresh and good. Cameroonian cuisine. Le Comptoir is known for its location on an old jetty, proving an excellent view of the setting sun behind Mount Cameroon. It is always a good sight with chilled beer. Rated 13 by Trip Advisor. Le Sorento – in Douala. This is definitely not for the fait hearted. Exotic cuisine (snakes, porcupine, etc etc). Good food with an inexpensive bar. A hunter’s or a gamer’s delight. Ivory Coast. (French: Côte d’Ivoire) officially the Republic of Ivory Coast (French: République de Côte d’Ivoire), is a country in West Africa. It borders Liberia, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Ghana; its southern boundary is along the Gulf of Guinea. Ivorian cuisine is the traditional cuisine of Côte d’Ivoire, or the Ivory Coast, and is based on tubers, grains, chicken, seafood, fish, fresh fruits, vegetables and spices, and is very similar to that of neighboring countries in west Africa. Common staple foods include grains and tubers. Côte d’Ivoire is one of the largest cocoa producers in the world, and also produces palm oil and coffee. Cassava and plantains are significant parts of Ivorian cuisine. A type of corn paste called “Aitiu” is used to prepare corn balls, and peanuts are widely used in many dishes. Attiéké is a popular side dish in Côte d’Ivoire made with grated cassava and is very similar in taste and consistency to couscous. A common street-vended food is alloco, which is ripe banana fried in palm oil, spiced with a spicy sauce made of onions and chili. It can be eaten alone as a snack or often with a hard-boiled egg, as well as a side dish. Grilled fish and grilled chicken are the most popular non-vegetarian foods. Lean, low-fat Guinea Fowl, which is popular in the region, is commonly referred as poulet bicyclette. Seafood includes tuna, sardines, shrimp and bonito, which are similar to tuna. Mafé is another common dish consisting of meat in a peanut sauce. Slow-simmered stews with various ingredients are another common food staple in Côte d’Ivoire. Kedjenou is a type of spicy stew consisting of chicken and vegetables that are slow-cooked in a sealed pot with little or no added liquid, which concentrates the flavors of the chicken and vegetables and tenderizes the chicken. It’s usually cooked in a pottery jar called a canary, over a slight fire, or cooked in an oven. Ivorian land snails are huge and highly appreciated, commonly grilled or eaten in sauce.

Restaurant Gourmandaise: Newest arrivals in town, but gaining an excellent reputation as the best cave in town to accompany some fine Michelin-class French cuisine.Mechoui: Non-lebanese people swear by the Lebanese cuisine here. This is thought to be the best Lebanese restaurant in all of West Africa.
